Waterloo Food Festival Surplus Food Challenge – 9 July
Waterloo Food Festival and food waste charity Plan Zheroes are to present a totally unique live cooking and eating experience on Thursday 9 July as part of this year’s Food Festival. Organisers are looking for three Waterloo chefs brave enough to put themselves forward to create a delicious dish from leftover food gathered that day from local restaurants, cafes and food shops. The Waterloo Surplus Food Challenge is aimed at raising awareness of the vast quantity of perfectly edible food that goes to waste each day.
Each chef will have just 30 minutes to shop from a ‘Surplus Larder’ – containing totally unseen ingredients – and create a tempting plate of food. Chefs will be allowed a number of staple ingredients like salt and olive oil to help pull their dishes together, and audience members will have a chance to sample each creation. The cooking challenge will take place on Emma Cons Gardens (opposite The Old Vic theatre) between 5-8pm.

The Waterloo Surplus Food Challenge is part of a larger event on 9 July aimed at raising awareness about sustainable food. Alongside the chef challenge four Waterloo businesses, already committed to being more sustainable, will be setting up stalls on Emma Cons Gardens. Between 12-2pm and 5-8pm chefs from Cubana, The Cut, Wahaca and The Wall SE1 @ House of Vans will serve their own sustainable dishes.
Amanda Faul, Deputy Chief Executive of Waterloo Business Improvement District, the organisers of the Waterloo Food Festival, said: “Our surplus food chefs won’t know what ingredients they’ll have to work with – it could be anything from left over sandwiches and croissants to piles of unused fruit and vegetables. Anyone taking up this challenge will need to be adept at thinking on their feet and have lots of creativity up their sleeves. We hope they come up with dishes to delight the public, as well as highlighting the seriousness of this subject – the vast quantity of perfectly edible food that gets thrown away each day.”
